Expertise and research interest on the interactions of insect-borne pathogenic trypanosomatid parasites with antimicrobial peptides to understand how these interactions influence parasite survival, growth and pathogenesis. Research projects include study of the role of extracellular matrix proteolytic modification by parasites in parasite tissue invasiveness and host cell infection.
Professor Lauren O. Bakaletz. Director, Center for Microbial Pathogenesis, Vice President, The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Professor, Pediatrics Professor, Otolaryngology Affiliate Faculty, Center for Clinical and Translational Research. Research focus: Molecular mechanisms that underlie polymicrobial infections of the respiratory tract, design and testing of novel vaccine candidates for the prevention and/or resolution of otitis media, characterization of biofilms induced by multiple bacterial pathogens of chronic and recurrent diseases of the airway, as well as other sites, in an attempt to identify potential targets for intervention or biofilm disruption.
Professor Juan Alfonzo. Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor Departmental Faculty, Graduate Faculty. Professor of Microbiology. Research interest: Trypanosomes’ RNA processing events as possible targets for the design of therapies against protozoan diseases. Focus on three facets of RNA processing: RNA editing and RNA modification in trypanosomes and tRNA import into mitochondria in various systems, with special focus on tRNA transport in human mitochondria.
