Edad Moderna
En la Edad Moderna, Miguel Angel Buonarroti, pintor, arquitecto y escultor italiano que hizo grandes obras como el David, es considerado como el padre de la Escultura. Andrés Vesalio
Andrés Vesalio (1514-1564), anatomista y fisiólogo belga cuyas disecciones y descripciones del cuerpo humano contribuyeron a desterrar errores vigentes desde la antigüedad y a sentar las bases de la moderna anatomía.
Vesalio nació en Bruselas. Hijo de un célebre farmacéutico, estudió en la Universidad de Lovaina y más tarde en la de París, donde permaneció desde 1533 hasta 1536. Estudió medicina, mostrando especial interés por la anatomía. Tras posteriores estudios en la Universidad de Padua en 1537, Vesalio obtuvo el título de médico y fue nombrado lector de cirugía. Durante sus ininterrumpidas investigaciones, Vesalio demostró que las enseñanzas del médico grecorromano Galeno, reverenciado en las escuelas médicas de su tiempo, estaban basadas en disecciones de animales, aunque su propósito era servir como guía de la estructura del cuerpo humano.
Vesalio escribió un elaborado tratado anatómico, Humani corporis fabrica libri septem (Siete libros sobre la estructura del cuerpo humano, 1543), basado en sus disecciones de cadáveres humanos. Los volúmenes estaban rica y meticulosamente ilustrados; muchos de sus magníficos grabados son obra de Jan van Calcar, un discípulo de Tiziano. Al ser el texto anatómico más extenso y exacto publicado hasta la fecha, desencadenó una gran controversia, pero contribuyó a que Vesalio fuera nombrado médico de la corte de Carlos I, emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano. Tras la abdicación de Carlos, su hijo Felipe II convirtió a Vesalio en uno de sus médicos en 1559. Tras pasar varios años en la corte, en Madrid, Vesalio emprendió peregrinaje a Tierra Santa. En el viaje de vuelta, en 1564, pereció en un naufragio frente a la isla griega de Zacynthos.
Gabriel Falopio
Gabriel Falopio (1523-1562), anatomista y botánico italiano, se le considera uno de los fundadores de la anatomía moderna. Nacido en Módena, estudió en la Universidad de Ferrara y enseñó anatomía en la Universidad de Pisa. Desde 1548 hasta su muerte, fue catedrático de cirugía y anatomía en la Universidad de Padua. Entre sus muchos descubrimientos en los campos de la anatomía y la fisiología humanas, se encuentran la función de los oviductos (véase Trompa de Falopio) y las estructuras diminutas del oído. También alcanzó fama como botánico y fue director del jardín botánico de Padua. En 1584 sus obras médicas fueron recopiladas y publicadas en Venecia.
Miguel Servet
Miguel Servet (1511-1553), médico y teólogo español que fue ejecutado debido a sus creencias, por dictado del gobierno calvinista de Ginebra. Existen dudas acerca de su lugar de nacimiento y así, si bien unas fuentes mencionan la localidad oscense de Villanueva de Sigena, otras citan la navarra de Tudela como su cuna. Estudió Derecho en la Universidad de Toulouse, medicina en las de París y Montpellier, y teología en Lovaina. Empezó la práctica de la medicina en 1540 en Vienne, Francia, donde ejerció además como médico personal del arzobispo. Hacia 1545 comenzó a mantener correspondencia con el teólogo protestante francés Juan Calvino. A pesar de considerarse católico, mantuvo una concepción personal propia sobre el dogma de la Santísima Trinidad y pidió permiso para visitar la ciudad teocrática creada por Calvino en Ginebra, donde fue detenido mientras asistía a misa. Acusado de herejía y blasfemia contra la cristiandad, murió quemado en la hoguera.
Las opiniones religiosas de Servet fueron combatidas por los católicos y por los protestantes de la época. En Del error de la Trinidad (1531) repudió la personalidad tripartita de Dios y el ritual del bautismo. En 1532 escribió Segundo Libro de diálogos sobre la Trinidad. Sus contribuciones científicas también fueron notables: La restauración del cristianismo, publicado poco antes de su muerte, contiene la primera descripción rigurosa del sistema circulatorio pulmonar.
William Harvey
William Harvey (1578-1657), médico inglés que descubrió la circulación de la sangre y el papel del corazón en su propulsión, refutando así las teorías de Galeno y sentando las bases de la fisiología moderna.
Nacido el 1 de abril de 1578 en Folkestone, Kent, Harvey se graduó en artes en el Gonville and Caius College de la Universidad de Cambridge, en 1597. Viajó a Padua, Italia, donde estudió durante cinco años con el famoso anatomista Fabricio, que estudiaba ya las válvulas de las venas. Tras doctorarse en medicina en 1602, regresó a Inglaterra y ejerció su profesión en la zona de Londres. Fue elegido miembro del Colegio de Médicos en 1607 así como responsable del Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital. Desde 1615 a 1656 fue conferenciante en Lumleian en el Colegio de Médicos. Ya en 1616 mencionaba en sus conferencias la función del corazón, y cómo éste impulsaba la sangre en un recorrido circular. Llegó a estas conclusiones no sólo a través de una larga serie de disecciones, sino también gracias a sus estudios sobre el movimiento del corazón y la sangre en una gran variedad de animales vivos. La precisión de sus observaciones estableció un modelo para futuras investigaciones biológicas.
Presentó formalmente sus hallazgos en 1628, año en que fue publicada su obra Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus (Ensayo anatómico sobre el movimiento del corazón y la sangre en los animales). En esta trascendental obra explicaba el método experimental y ofrecía una precisa descripción del mecanismo del aparato circulatorio. Debido a que carecía de microscopio, la única parte importante del proceso que omitió fue el papel desempeñado por los capilares. No obstante, postuló su existencia, confirmada no mucho después por el italiano Marcelo Malpighi.
De Motu Cordis hizo que Harvey sufriera duras críticas por parte de algunos de sus coetáneos, aunque éstas se vieron ampliamente compensadas por el posterior reconocimiento del valor de sus aportaciones. Sus investigaciones en el campo de la embriología quedaron reflejadas en Exercitationes de Generatione Animalium (Ensayos sobre la generación de los animales). Fue nombrado presidente del Colegio de Médicos en 1654, pero declinó dicho honor a causa de su delicada salud. Murió el 3 de junio de 1657, en Londres.
Marcello Malpighi
Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694), fisiólogo italiano cuyos descubrimientos sobre anatomía microscópica desterraron antiguas creencias médicas y abrieron el camino a la fisiología y la histología modernas.
Nacido en Crevalcore el 10 de marzo de 1628, Malpighi se graduó en medicina y filosofía en la Universidad de Bolonia en 1653. Siendo catedrático de teoría de la medicina en la Universidad de Pisa, inició sus observaciones microscópicas y adoptó una actitud crítica muy severa respecto a los supuestos en los que se basaban la fisiología y la medicina. En 1659 regresó a Bolonia y en 1661 realizó su descubrimiento más importante al describir la red de capilares pulmonares que conectan las venas con las arterias, completando así el ciclo circulatorio postulado por el médico inglés William Harvey. Hasta ese momento había prevalecido la antigua creencia según la cual la sangre se transformaba en carne en la periferia del cuerpo.
Entre otros descubrimientos de Malpighi figuran sus observaciones sobre los componentes microscópicos del hígado, el cerebro, los riñones, el bazo y los huesos, así como sobre las realizadas sobre la capa interior de la piel, a la que se dió su nombre. Fue el primero en descubrir los glóbulos rojos de la sangre y en demostrar que eran ellos quienes daban a ésta su color. También identificó las papilas gustativas y describió el embrión de pollo, el desarrollo del gusano de seda y la estructura de las plantas. Malpighi creía que la materia viva estaba compuesta de diminutas glándulas que separaban o mezclaban los fluidos corporales. Aunque malinterpretó las funciones microscópicas de los órganos, preparó el terreno para la teoría celular y la histología. Sus descubrimientos sobre el funcionamiento oculto de los organismos obligó a los médicos de la época a replantearse seriamente teorías firmemente establecidas. Aunque en sus últimos años recibió todo tipo de honores y fue nombrado médico personal del papa Inocencio XII, sus descubrimientos fueron objeto de una agria e incluso violenta oposición durante la mayor parte de su vida. Murió el 29 de noviembre de 1694 en Roma.
Giambattista Morgagni
Giambattista Morgagni (1682-1771), anatomista italiano fundador de la anatomía patológica. Nació en Forlì y estudió en la Universidad de Bolonia. Fue nombrado catedrático de anatomía de la Universidad de Padua en 1715. Relacionó numerosos exámenes en cadáveres con las correspondientes historias clínicas, y descubrió la relación existente entre las enfermedades y las transformaciones físicas de los órganos. Sus descripciones de los efectos de las enfermedades sobre el corazón, los pulmones y el hígado fueron especialmente precisas.
